Olompali State Park, situated between Petaluma and Novato in Sonoma County, is an archetype of California History. From Maidu Indian lands, to Mexican Rancho, to American homestead ...

... to 1920's robber barron mansion, to 1960's commune (the area is even pictured on the cover of a Grateful Dead album). The hippies accidentally burned up the old mansion, and you can still see slagheaps of old melted vinyl hippy records inside the boarded up remains.

The hike takes you up Mt. Burdell, where unfortunately, a lot of sudden oak death is occuring.
