Because of the dramatic elevation gains in West Reno up to the Carson Range (from 5,600 ft in town to Rose Peak at 10,700 ft), I had fun playing around with planning hikes in
ArcGIS 3-D Analyst. This is all common in Google Earth but cool to build on one's own. Trails range from real trails, to non-trails, to no-man's land where brush makes the passage impossible.
With nothing but topo to guide you, it's a real adventure to see if you can get where you thought you might. Below the 3-D stuff is a flat image of the same area.
